“What term should be used to describe the division which keeps the various types of space away from each other ... distortion? disjunction? Schism? Break? ... the term used is far less important than the distance that separates ‘ideal’ space, which has to do with mental categories from ‘real’ space, which is the space of social practice. In actuality, each of these two kinds of space involves, underpins and presupposes the other.” (Lefebvre, 1974, p.14)

 

In his book ‘The production of space’, Henri Lefebvre, argues that every society produces a certain space which defines that particular society. This social space produces a construction based on values and meanings which effect spatial practices and perceptions. 

 

The title VERNACULAR illustrates a nostalgic walk through the current evidence of our country’s development and the ethics portrayed towards sentimental spaces and memories based on values and meanings. The term ‘Vernacular Architecture’ characterises a type of architectural style focusing on basic human requirements where local builders created spaces according to their needs, making use of available construction material and accessibility of these materials rather than relying on architects and outsourced material. 

VERNACULAR showcases the mental state of longing through the simple form of architecture which is being forgotten in today’s modern construction whilst exploring the emotional link between architectonics and nostalgia. This theme raises crucial questions in today’s architectural depictions and usage of space and a wish to stay in a better past and a direct sensitivity towards a questionable future.
